I try to take care of myself, I really do. I exercise regularly, try to eat healthy and keep my weight down. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I always wear sunscreen and I don’t eat Poptarts (well, not regularly). But try as we might, the truth is, we are all getting older and there are some ailments that we can’t control…like arthritis, spinal degeneration, or cataracts. It just happens as we get older.
My mother had a counter cluttered with products I deemed to be ”senior snake oil”. You know, stuff that probably doesn’t help, but it made her feel good trying. Well recently I purchased my first of these items…Blue Emu cream. Yep. I said it. I bought some Blue Emu cream. It even sounds like snake oil, doesn’t it? How can emu oil help my aching elbow? Am I the Tin Man? Besides, I’m not even sure that you can get oil out of an emu, can you? I don’t know, but I’m giving it a try. Who knows, maybe my mother was right after all?
What’s the point of this pondering?? Well it reminded me of this verse in 2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV): “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” Yes! God didn’t make our physical bodies to last forever, but He did give us a soul that was designed for eternity. Clearly, that’s more important, right?
So if you’ve got a shelf full of products like Blue Emu, Icy Hot, heating pads and Bengay, I say … .do what you’ve got to do, maybe it will work! But it helps me to remember that my aching, aging body is just temporary. I’d rather focus on what’s eternal.
The next time you wake up in the morning and realize you’ve inexplicably injured yourself while sleeping, go ahead, slather on the Blue Emu, turn on some worship music, read your Bible, and spend some time allowing Him to heal and renew your soul. It lasts longer.
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV
