Lately I’ve been noticing a lot of “Christmas in July” marketing and movies. I’m not sure I like it. I feel like it’s just a manipulative way to boost mid-year shopping lulls. But, I do love snowmen! Who doesn’t? So when I saw this little guy, (pictured above) I couldn’t help but smile. However, things aren’t always as they appear….
This little guy isn’t a snowman at all! He is a saltman. That’s right! He’s made entirely of Okinawan sea salt. He’s loaded with minerals that are essential for us, he has no additives whatsoever, and he’s low in sodium chloride (the stuff that can cause high blood pressure). Plus, when sprinkled on my veggies, he’s really tasty too!
As I was taking a deep dive into sea salt, (yeah, pun definitely intended), it got me thinking about Jesus’ statement that we, as followers of Christ, are “the salt of the earth”. Well, my “deep dive” enriched the meaning of His words to me. Did you know that the ancients would have had salt that more closely resembled my saltman than any table salt we have on our tables today.? Modern salt has been highly processed, bleached and stripped of its goodness and essential minerals. It is mostly sodium chloride plus additives to stop it from clumping together. Ugh! Because of all that, most doctors recommend that we limit our intake. And you know what? Since it’s been stripped of those essential minerals, it doesn’t even taste that great!
No, it’s nothing like the salt Jesus was referring to.
So considering this, maybe we should rethink His statement? Here’s what I’m praying this week…
Oh Lord, may my conversations be seasoned with the essentials of your grace, love, and wisdom and not the highly processed and empty philosophies of the world or media. Help me to share Your Word, Your truth with no additives (personal opinion or bias) whatsoever. May I leave others thirsty to know more of You. And, when we “clump together” each week to worship and hear Your Word, may we encourage each other and bring You glory. And lastly Lord, when You look at us, I pray we make You smile.
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” Mathew 5:13 NKJV
